These awards recognize individuals who have made significant contributions to their professions, communities, and society, locally, regionally, and globally. Through the Alumni Excellence Awards, Makerere University honours alumni who inspire current and future generations, strengthen the University’s reputation, and demonstrate the enduring impact of a Makerere education.

We invite alumni, colleagues, and members of the Makerere community to nominate deserving graduates whose accomplishments exemplify excellence and meaningful contribution.

Award categories

Recognising excellence across fields

  1. Lifetime Excellence Award

    This award recognises alumni with 20 or more years of sustained professional impact whose careers demonstrate exceptional leadership, achievement, and contribution to their field, society, and the legacy of Makerere University.

    Eligibility criteria

    The nominee must be a Makerere University graduate with 20 or more years of professional experience. Contributions must be sustained, significant, and verifiable.

  2. Mid-Career Excellence Award

    The Mid-Career Excellence Award honours alumni with at least 10 years of professional experience who have shown significant achievement, leadership, and growing influence in their profession or industry.

    Eligibility criteria

    The nominee must be a Makerere University graduate with at least 10 years of professional experience. Achievements must be documented and verifiable.

  3. Under 30 Excellence Award

    This award celebrates young alumni under the age of 30 who have demonstrated outstanding achievement, innovation, or leadership early in their careers and show strong potential for future impact.

    Eligibility criteria

    The nominee must be a Makerere University graduate under the age of 30 at the time of nomination.

  4. Under 50 Excellence Award

    The Under 50 Excellence Award recognises alumni under the age of 50 who have made notable contributions to their profession, community, or industry through leadership, innovation, or service.

    Eligibility criteria

    The nominee must be a Makerere University graduate under the age of 50 at the time of nomination.

  5. International Excellence Award

    This award honours alumni who have made significant contributions on the international stage, enhancing global engagement, cross-border collaboration, and Makerere University's international reputation.

    Eligibility criteria

    The nominee must be a Makerere University graduate whose contributions have had demonstrable international impact.

  6. Innovation and Entrepreneurial Award

    The Innovation and Entrepreneurial Excellence Award recognises alumni who have demonstrated creativity, enterprise, and leadership in developing innovative solutions, businesses, or ventures that create economic or social value.

    Eligibility criteria

    The nominee must be a Makerere University graduate who has founded, led, or significantly contributed to an innovative venture or enterprise.

  7. Community Impact and Social Change Award

    This award celebrates alumni whose work has driven positive social change, improved lives, and strengthened communities through service, advocacy, public leadership, or development initiatives.

    Eligibility criteria

    The nominee must be a Makerere University graduate whose community impact goes beyond professional obligations. Impact must be demonstrable.

  8. Culture, Creativity and Sports Award

    The Culture, Creativity and Sports Award honours alumni who have made outstanding contributions in arts, culture, creative industries, or sports, promoting excellence, national pride, and cultural expression.

    Eligibility criteria

    The nominee must be a Makerere University graduate with demonstrable contributions in arts, culture, creative industries, or sports.

  9. Honorary Alumni Award

    The Honorary Alumni Award recognises individuals who are not graduates of Makerere University but have made exceptional contributions to the University's growth, mission, values, and global standing.

    Eligibility criteria

    The nominee need not be a Makerere University graduate. Contributions to the University must be exceptional and verifiable.

What you will need

  • Nominee details: Full name, degree(s) earned, and contact information
  • Nominator details: Your full name and contact information
  • Nomination letter: A brief letter outlining the nominee’s achievements
  • Statement of merit: In 300 words or fewer, describe how the nominee meets the award criteria
  • Nomination summary: In 50 words or fewer, summarise why this nominee deserves recognition
  • Optional links: LinkedIn profile, published articles, media features, or social media

Nomination guidelines

  • Nominations must be submitted online using the official nomination form.
  • All nominations must be complete and submitted by the stated deadline.
  • Incomplete or late submissions will not be considered.
  • Each nomination must correspond to one award category only.
  • Nominators may submit more than one nomination, but each nominee must have a separate submission.
  • Nominees must be alumni of Makerere University (except the Honorary Alumni Award).
  • Nominators and nominees cannot be the same person.
  • Supporting information must be accurate and verifiable.
  • The University reserves the right to verify information and reclassify nominations.
  • The decisions of the Selection Committee are final.
