Alumni Giving Circle Restores Historic Library

A group of alumni raised over 200 million Ugandan shillings to restore the historic Main Library reading room.

The Main Library at Makerere University is more than a building. It is a symbol of the university's intellectual heritage. When decades of deferred maintenance threatened the integrity of the historic reading room, a group of alumni decided to act.

The Makerere Alumni UK Chapter, led by Dr. Sarah Kiwanuka (BA '94, MA '98), organised a giving circle that raised over 200 million Ugandan shillings in eighteen months.

The restored reading room was rededicated in a ceremony attended by the Vice Chancellor, the British High Commissioner, and over 150 alumni from Uganda and abroad.

“The Main Library is where I became a scholar. Restoring it was not charity; it was an obligation.”
